Livestock disaster drill tests multiple state agencies

Albuquerque Journal

July 24, 2018 06:40 PM

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A mock disaster, involving hundreds of livestock, unfolded at the Albuquerque Sunport Tuesday.

The New Mexico Department of Agriculture said the drill involved a hypothetical situation where a plane filled with cows, from Argentina, had to make an emergency landing at the Sunport.

Several state and federal agencies were tasked responding to the hypothetical situation.

“Whenever there is an emergency, one of the main things that happens is there is a breakdown in communication and we don’t know who to call. So this brings us together, we have folks from all over, that are working together, that are putting faces to names, phone numbers things like that, so if an incident truly happens we know where our resources are,” said Veterinarian Diagnostic Lab Director Tim Hanosch.
